Chrysler 300C: The Stretched Version
As automakers go, developing well received models is a chore all by itself. When a model becomes successful, as has the Chrysler 300C, the result’s favorable press coverage, high customer satisfaction ratings, and a “halo” effect that can extend to the entire product line. Chrysler’s 300C is a hit, but the German-Yankee automaker isn’t stopping there. A stretched version of the automobile is being developed, one which will notice a following amongst enthusiasts, but only if the price is right.
So, why would DaimlerChrysler authorize a stretched version of the 300C? For many reasons including:
The Limo Market – Although the 300C is not on the identical level because the Lincoln Town Car or Cadillac DTS, the automobile does compete with the Ford Crown Victoria. Hence, taxi and limousine operators can be drawn to the stretched 300C because the car gives its passengers the space that they need.
The Pursuit Market – The Ford Crown Victoria is the most popular police pursuit vehicle followed by the Chevy Impala. Chrysler long ago ceded this market when they quit building larger rear wheel drive automobiles. The stretched 300C may fit in nicely and provide the automaker some additional sales to spice up market share. Look for a equally stretched Dodge Charger to additionally be designed once 300C demand has been proven.
The Luxury Market – No, the 300C is not a luxury automotive, however a model coming back down the pike 3-four years from currently will be. Yes, the Chrysler Imperial will be returning and it, too, can be a stretched version of the 300C, however even longer and bigger than the stretched version of the 300C. Don’t think for a moment that DaimlerChrysler will not be measuring demand for its new 300C to see Imperial demand.
For the record, there are some things that we have a tendency to understand concerning the larger 300C: the automobile can be stretched solely by six inches and all of those gains can show up in the rear passenger area. Additionally, Chrysler can not be building the stretched 300C, instead an outside provider will handle the task of taking existing models and remodeling them.
Costs for the larger 300C haven’t been finalized yet, but they’ll carry a premium of as much as $5000 over the shorter model. This is a priority, however, as the value could be additional than what some livery drivers could justify. Perhaps DaimlerChrysler can eat some of the costs and hold the price all the way down to a $1000 premium. If they don’t, the company could be in for a rude awakening and realize demand for the stretched 300C to be tepid at best.

Outfitting Your Vehicle with a Roofrack
There can be no doubting the fact that ours is a country that is in love with the open road. We are, in effect, a nation of car lovers, as proven by the wide ownership of vehicles. It is a part of our very American dream to go out on the open road in search of something exciting or better, hence our love affair with the endless road trip. The thing about such long and extensive road trips is that it is necessary to bring along a fair amount of stuff on the ride; hence the ubiquitousness of roofracks on vehicles on all of America’s roads.
The most common car on the nation’s highways is nothing more than an average passenger car, relatively compact and tiny, which in all its many varieties has one thing that is shared in common: truly restricted storage space. It is as a result of that predicament that some ingenious person had the fantastic idea to design the first roofrack, effectively converting the roof of their car into an additional (and spacious) place for stowing all sorts of things. Thanks to the roofrack, drivers can afford to haul more equipment and luggage along on the trip while simultaneously saving valuable space within the vehicle, enhancing not only comfort but more importantly safety on the road, and giving owners of ordinary cars a way to bring along the sort of bulky sporting items they’ll be using on their trip (skis, surf boards, fishing rods, mountain bikes, etc.).
Exactly what kind of roofrack a person will end up putting on top of their car is going to be greatly influenced by exactly what it is that they planning on putting in it, or on top of it, as happens to be the case. There are very basic and typical roofracks that are suited for simply bringing along light items like some extra clothing and other trifling materials, while in order to mount very heavy and bulky objects such as extreme sports gear, etc., it is important to count on the support of a more sturdy and heavy duty roofrack.
Furthermore, the kind of roofrack you put atop your car will be determined by what kind of car you have, and what its roof is like. Older car models generally were built with the roof gutters that can easily be used for mounting a roofrack, whereas in modern models these elements have largely been forsaken. Even though you may not have the necessary components built into your vehicle, in most cases there is a way to safely and securely fix a roofrack on your car.
If you do happen to have a car with some variety of roof ribs or roof gutters then you are half-way towards your goal; then, if you have no such features on your roof then there is the possibility of strategically placing hooks or clamps in your door frame to serve as the basis for a roofrack.
To securely mount a roofrack on your car you will need to have two roof rails running parallel to the car’s sides and at least one (though in some cases two or three) cross bar connecting them. The cross bar cannot be overlooked, as it is quite literally the foundation of a safe roofrack, and without it there is no guarantee of security.
If you do not have any roof rails on your vehicle, there happen to be do-it-yourself kits that allow you to bolt sturdy rails onto your roof all on your own…though you have to get over the fear of drilling a hole in your roof before you can do so! When done right, there are no safety or aesthetic concerns related to such an operation.
Don’t just settle for any kind of roofrack, and make sure that the one you choose is suited to the use you have in mind. Don’t use the same roofrack to load an extra suitcase or bag that you plan on using to haul each of your family members’ mountain bikes with!

Bullbars, Is There A Smarter Alternative?
I’m a bit of a 4WD buff, I always have been. From climbing impossible mountains to cruising through the sand dunes for an ocean fishing expedition, I just love getting out there, into places unreachable by foot or road.
On a recent trip, I hit a kangaroo at a low speed. Thankfully the kangaroo bounded off with little more than a fright and there was basically no damage to the vehicle. The incident got me thinking about frontal protection though. If I were going any faster, the damage to the jeep could have been significant, leaving us stranded and putting my family in harms way.
So I called my mates at All Vehicle Accessories in Melbourne. They told me about these innovative new “plastic bullbars”. Having not heard about them before and being a bit bewildered by the chat (I mean, how can plastic protect my jeep?) I decided to do some research. This is what I found out.
Topic 1. Safety – With frontal protection products, there are 3 general areas of concern regarding safety. These are the ability to protect passengers, the ability to protect pedestrians and the ability to protect your car.
Its pretty funny when you look around for information on the relative safety performance of bullbars and smartbars. People who love bullbars keep pointing out that at 150kms/h a collision will be fatal. So to be clear, we are not looking at the 150kms/h collission. Rather we are comparing performance of these products at speeds up to and including fatal impact, but not exceeding it. That means at speeds which are less than and equal to the point where a collision becomes fatal to the vehicle, passengers or pedestrian.
The two frontal protection devices perform differently as they have been designed to do different things. Bullbars have been designed to be the “unbreakable barrier”. They are intended to form a barrier between your vehicle and the collision that nothing can get through. Smartbars on the other hand have been designed, through their hollow polymer construction, to absorb, cushion and decelerate the forces of impact. Ie. To be a “frontal airbag” if you like, albeit for your car. When you look at the independent tests, there really is no escaping it. The fact is that up to the point of fatal impact, smartbars protect your vehicle, your passengers and pedestrians better than bullbars do.
To paint a picture, imagine you fall over in the street and strike your head on an iron postal letter box. Its going to hurt like crazy and probably leave you concussed. Now imagine in the same fall, you knock over one of those big wheelie bins, your head hitting the middle. The wheelie bin will collapse on itself somewhat, cushioning the impact, leaving you a little bemused and with a good story for your mates. The smartbars work in the same fashion.
Topic 2. Performance – There is no argument that smartbars are significantly lighter than bullbars. This means better performance for your vehicle. To embellish, if you install a smartbar instead of a bullbar, your vehicle will have less tyre wear, less suspension wear and safer handling, just because it is lighter. They also provide better value for money than the alternatives and are more environmentally friendly. Manufacturing smartbars produces less than 1% of the green house gasses which the manufacture of metal bullbars produce. So performance wise, smartbars are more efficient with your car, your wallet and the environment.
Topic 3. Maintenance – Metal rusts. Metal looses its lustre. Metal reflects. A rusting bullbar requires significant work to clean up. A dull bullbar requires significant polishing to make it shine again. And a reflecting bullbar will effect your vision everytime another set of headlights hit it. This is one of the defining features of the smartbar. Maintenance requires a bucket of soapy water, a sponge and a quick wipe down. Thats it. The plastic parts do not rust, they do not require buffing or polishing and they will never reflect light from another source.
This is a simple presentation of the facts which I’ve found in my research, when looking at viable frontal protection products for my jeep. As always, do your own research and make the best decisions you can. I’m sure if you do do some research and make your decision on the facts rather than someone elses “tuff man” image, the decision won’t be that hard at all.
